WIWU-TV Preps for NAIA National Coverage

WIWU-TV Preps for NAIA National Coverage

Track athletes from across the country are arriving in Marion, Indiana for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships and the coverage team from WIWU-TV is also gearing up for 3 days of exciting action. The Indiana Wesleyan University television station is presenting online coverage for the third year in a row, in partnership with students from the Convergent Journalism program in the IWU Division of Communication & Theatre.

The focus of this year’s coverage is online information and stories from the national event. For the past two years, the television station put most of its effort into live broadcasts, but will not be able to provide those online streams because of equipment and weather-related issues at the track arena. “This year, we’ll put stories, photos and video highlights online, and make our website a sort of one-stop information stop for the NAIA nationals,” said Randall E. King, IWU Director of Broadcast Media.

IWU Students and recent Journalism graduates from the award-winning newspaper, The Sojourn, will update results, photos, videos and provide full stories of each major event at a special website, IWUNaia.com. “We hope this website will be the ESPN.com of the NAIA event and we have a great team of journalists on staff,” said King.

A whole group of us would really love to see the Warner Pacific Men run the 4x100 relay on Thursday, any chance you can video it for us? Thank You

Kind of disappointed that there will not be any live stream of the events this year. It definitely takes out alot of the excitement when you have to watch it delayed and most likely will already know the outcome. Hopefully you guys can get this problem fixed for future championships.

Where are the updates at? The meet has started and there is nothing being posted except a few photos and there mostly pictures of IWU student atheltes. I think ESPN.com is safe!

Very disappointed there is not live video streaming. Was hoping to watch my sister online like I have the past two years since I can't be there. So far the "updates" are just like text messages...which i can get from my parents who are there. I really hope changes can be made in the future since Indiana is hosting it again next year.

I am also very disappointed that there will not be any live stream for this event. I really enjoyed watching my son compete last year, live. I guess some coverage is better than no coverage at all, but it was fun cheering him on through the live stream. I guess the point is that you just got to be there!

Thank you for all your feedback. We are again sorry we cannot offer live streams this year. We are working to cover this fast-moving event as the day progresses and hope you will be patient as we deal with technology and staffing limitations.

This is IWU's third year hosting the event and the first, two years they have th ability to have live coverage. I dont understand it. If you can not bring live coverage atlest give timly updates, "there are only so many events that can be run at once, so put a repoter at them". I would rather know what is going on during the event as opposed to reading about it all after it is done. The least you could have done is sent up a blog or a running form so that it would seem more like live coverage. With how large of a financial backing IWU has, I feel this is a an excuse filled and sorry attempt at covering a Nation Championship Event. I would have understood if this were your first year hosting and you had a week to prepare, not your third year with years "and experence" to prepare!

Has there been any word on what is up with the women's results? For some reason the men's have been posted very quickly however when I check the women's they just show the startlists still. Again thank you for all the coverage.

Fail... no streaming... no updates... limited photos.... no vids.... depressing.

I don't understand why we can't get timely results. Either the meet is running way late or the posting of results is terrible. If you are going to bid on a National Championship, you should have to do a professional job.

How said, a national event and no live stream and the results are not timely at all..............

Can we please get some updated results???? Last event was over 30 mins ago, why so slow?
  15. May 25, 2012
No streaming, not even pay for view, no timely updates, not good, shows you couldn't deliver the whole package. We have to wait for a text or phone call from an athlete to get info. Do you think a year will help you get ready for next year?

Shows that track is a second class citizen for the NAIA. I see that softball and baseball have streaming video. Results for events that completed hours ago still not posted.

To be fair to the NAIA it is the host school that is supplying all of the coverage for the meet. The results have been a little slow but if you keep the page on the latest completed heat then usually you can see all of the results as they happen. However there really is no excuse for the video given that the previous years it has had great live streaming with no problems (not including the rain delay that caused the 4x4's to be missed last year.) I think this site is definitely an upgrade from last years' page, but I'm not sure I would have traded the video for it.

The NAIA does not provide for media coverage in this case. It is the choice of the host institution to provide it as a service to the member schools. The IWU TV station provided the live coverage for the past few years, but discovered risks to equipment and personnel through the methods it had to use on the outdoor track. The first year, equipment was nearly damaged by heat. Last year, it was heavy rains that flooded the infield where the equipment was housed. These risks could not be taken another year. There are also ongoing technical and staffing limitations that make even video highlights hard to deliver efficiently. This is certainly frustrating to anyone who saw WIWU-TV's live coverage in the past, but we hope the website provided some alternative for following an important event.
